Four and a half hours after leaving the doctors office, we had just finished moving Emilio's bed to the living room when the phone rang and Greg answered. I saw the look on his face change during the call and my heart sank to my knees without even knowing what was being said. Greg asked if he could pass the phone to me. Our doctor was on the phone and he said that Emilio's white blood count came back extremely elevated at 41. I soon came to learn that normal was considered between 4-10. He told us that to him, this signified that Emilio was very ill and fighting a major infection of some sort, or there was something going on with his blood.
He advised us to leave to the hospital immediately and that from there we would most likely be transferred up to the children's hospital in Portland. This was extremely shocking news and we were very scared for our son and what was happening in his body.
I called my sister to come and stay with the other children until Grandpa made it to our house.
We got our shoes on, a blanket and bowl for Emilio and we headed to Riverbend Hospital Emergency.
